Equipment, aids and adaptations
Specialist equipment may make life easier for you and the person you care for. Some of the things equipment can help with include:
- Getting around inside and outside the home
- Carrying out household activities such as cooking and cleaning
- Bathing, washing and going to the toilet
- Making your home safer for the person you care for
- enabling the person you care for to carry out their work or hobbies
Occupational therapy

There is a Help to Live at Home Equipment Catalogue which allows you to self assess some equipment. Most equipment is provided free of charge.
How to pay for equipment and adaptations
You may be able to get a disabled facilities grant or renovations grant. Contact your local carers' centre for help.

Advice and information about equipment to support independent living.
- British Red Cross: volunteers provide short-term loans of medical equipment, such as wheelchairs and bath seats for people with a disability or illness. Equipment is loaned with the option of providing a voluntary contribution. Main depot: Red Cross House, Colwell Drive, Abingdon OX14 1AU, open Monday to Friday 1.30pm to 3.45pm. 01235 552 664.
