Rights and benefits

If you need help or advice on benefits and allowances, you can ask your local Oxfordshire carers' centre.

• Carer's Allowance
  The main benefit for people looking after a family member or friend who is ill or disabled.
  
  
• Carer's assessment
  An assessment is the first step to getting help and support
  
  
• Attendance Allowance
  For disabled people over 65 who find it difficult to care for themselves.
  
  
• Disability Living Allowance
  For disabled people under 65 who find it difficult to care for themselves.
  
  
• Direct payments
  Direct payments are cash payments Oxfordshire County Council may be able to provide instead of giving you a service.
  
  
• Income Support and Pension Credit
  For people with either no income or incomes below minimum levels set by the Government.
   
• Incapacity benefit
  For people who are unable to work because of illness or incapacity.
  
  
• Working tax credit
  To claim, you should be more than 25 and work for at least 30 hours a week.
  
  
• Child Tax Credit
  For people who look after a child under 16 (or under 19 in education)
  
  
• Health benefits
  People with low incomes or medical conditions may get help with certain health costs.
  
  
• Social Fund
  Helps people to pay off one-off costs such as funeral, winter or cold weather expenses.
  
  
• Council Tax Benefit
  Some carers may get a discount in their Council Tax.
  
  
• Housing benefit
  Helps people on a low income to pay their rent.
  
  
• Job Seekers' Allowance
  For people who are unemployed or work part-time and are expected to find full-time work
