How best to support the person you care for
Recognise that you are a carer
Many people do not realise that they are carers. You may feel that it is only natural to care for the person, because of your relationship with them. Perhaps you haven’t noticed that you are now in a special role and having to do more. Recognising that you are a carer is a first step to getting help and support.
Involve others
- make sure your GP is aware of the role you play – you do need to look after yourself
- ensure your family realise that your situation has changed and perhaps they can lend a hand
- give them an idea of how best to do this
- your neighbours could be asked to hold a key in case of emergencies
Contact local organisations
Contact local organisations such as Carers’ centres to talk through things and to find out about services in your area for you and the person you care for.
